East Coast USA Tailor-made Holidays

Introduction

From sweeping coastlines and verdant national parks to the icons of New York to the historic charms of Philadelphia, discover why America's East Coast is one of the country's most vibrant and varied regions.

New York City

As arguably the world's most famous city, New York's skyline, theatres, restaurants and sights are recognised the world over. Just a short hop across the Atlantic from the UK, it's an obvious favourite for a long weekend away, with world-class shopping, entertainment and accommodation so readily available amid the bustle and excitement of Manhattan. But, the Big Apple is also the perfect launchpad for longer holidays in the wider region, with the myriad highlights of New York State on the doorstep and the sights of Pennsylvania easily accessible to car or train.

New York State

For those that follow the coast or the Hudson River north from New York, the rewards are plentiful. Indeed, a road trip through the wider New York State might take in everything from the sweeping sands of Long Island to the wineries of Finger Lakes, Buffalo's food and craft beer scene and even the raging torrents of Niagara Falls on the Canadian border. In summer, the Hudson Valley, with its grand mansions and 20th-century estates, has long been a favourite among New York's elite – a verdant retreat, away from the heat of the city. Likewise, the beaches of Long Island, particularly areas such as East Hampton, serve up sophistication and sunshine coupled with seemingly endless golden sands. If you're visiting in autumn, be sure to head further north to Finger Lakes to when the fall colours and the Finger Lakes grape harvest are are in full flow.

Pennsylvania

A journey through Pennsylvania is like a journey back in time. Head to Philadelphia to chart the history of America right back to its birth in a city where the Declaration of Independence was signed and the USA constitution formed. Be sure to visit its oldest symbol of inclusivity, the Liberty Bell, and don't forget to follow in the footsteps of Rocky Balboa with a sprint up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Arts – an iconic movie moment. In Pittsburg, be sure to take a ride on the city's 19th-century funicular, then get a ht of culture at the excellent Andy Warhol Museum. Then, away from the cities, the mountains of the Appalachian Trail offer world-class hiking while amid the small towns of Lancaster County there's the chance to glimpse into the culture of the Amish.

Capital Region

A tour of the Capital Region is the chance to Immerse yourself in a truly authentic American experience. Be sure to spend time in Washington, DC, with its iconic monuments and museums at the very heart of the US political establishment. Then, swap city fun for country living as you drive out to explore the beautiful beaches and majestic mountains of Maryland and Virginia, where history and natural beauty abound.
