Location
Surrounded by the region’s ancestral vines, the hotel aims to match the calm of the Douro Valley in its own modern elegance. Indeed, it sits right on the north bank of the region’s river author, enjoying spectacular views over its shimmering waters and forested frame. There’s even a pier if you’d like to arrive by boat. However, as it’s 75 km from Porto and 45 km from Régua, it’s easily accessible by car, while preserving its idyllic seclusion. You might also want to arrive by train, with Pala Station just a few minutes’ walk away – the Douro Line is a delightful way to travel the valley.
Accommodation
Each of the hotel’s 70 rooms take full advantage of their privileged setting, with panoramic views of the Douro River hosted by floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies. In contrast to the region’s heritage, each room is realised in a contemporary fashion. Generously sized beds butt up against oversized padded headboards, seats sweep in designer curves and a muted colour scheme promotes natural light. Perhaps consider upgrading to a suite, for whirlpool baths, apartment layouts and private gardens that open right out onto views of the river.
Dining
As with each region of Portugal, the Douro Valley is rich in local flavours. It’s all underpinned by a reliance on fresh, locally sourced produce, which is showcased in the hotel’s Palata D’Ouro Restaurant. Here, tasting programmes demonstrate the country’s diverse gastronomy, drawing influence from across Portugal’s shorelines, agriculture and historic international links. If you’re feeling inspired, consider booking onto a cooking class or port tasting workshop. It’s all presented in the hotel’s signature contemporary style, with yet more views over the Douro Valley. There’s also a pair of panoramic terraces where lighter meals are complemented by a snack service – ideal for lazy lunches.
Facilities
When you travel to the Douro Valley, you travel to relax. That’s why you’ll find a superb spa among the hotel’s excellent amenities. Here, you’ll enjoy a full complement of treatments – from facials to massages – along with jet pools, a sauna and a hammam. There’s even a pair of shower massage rooms – a Vichy, lie-down offering and a Scottish stand-up alternative. The hotel also features two bars – each with delightful terraces – along with a pool and well-equipped fitness club.
