About
Recommended for:
Natural world | Wildlife
Four glorious suites comprise the Drift House which is an entirely unique and individual place to stay. It could be classed as a boutique hotel, a B&B or a luxury retreat but however you want to describe it you'll find a relaxed, restful place where nothing is to much trouble for your hosts. The original bluestone building is complimented by a modern addition which utilises local stone and salvaged timbers and has a glass link joining the two buildings. There's an arty feel with vibrant use of colour and it is a tranquil child-free zone.
Location
Drift House is located close to the beach in Port Fairy, which is the start or end of the Great Ocean Road depending on your direction of travel. Port Fairy itself is a pretty town, home to charming antique shops filled with Australiana, galleries, craft studios and boutiques.
Accommodation
There are four suites here, numbered quite simply from one to four and each one is very different. Suite one occupies the entire ground floor of the original building and has exclusive use of the deep veranda. There is an open fire place, deep stone bathtub in the bedroom and a spacious bathroom with walk in rain shower. Suite two can be found on the first floor of the original building and has sole use of the wide balcony which overlooks the Moyne River. Modern art work adorns the walls and the bathroom pod separates the bathroom and sleeping area. Suite three occupies the new building and features original stone walls and makes the most of recycled materials; the private outdoor courtyard with huge open fireplace is perfect for relaxing evenings under the stars. Last but not least suite four can also be found in the new building and is a very modern, contemporary space with floor to ceiling louvres in the lounge enabling you to adjust the light as you desire. The vast bathroom stretches the entire length of the suite, housing a huge bath and separate shower. All suites offer a kitchen area, lounge space, maxi-bar and complimentary WiFi.
Dining
There is no restaurant here but breakfast hampers are provided and an extensive range of restaurants, pubs and cafes are a short walk away. The suites also lend themselves to in-house dining and the maxi bars are stocked with pasta, sauces and cheese along with other tempting nibbles, red and white wine, beer, cider, water and juice.
Facilities
There's a library with a good selection of DVDs and CDs and a 10m solar heated pool in the garden. The shops, restaurants, cafes and galleries of Port Fairy are a short walk away. Port Fairy is the last town on what is known as the ‘Shipwreck Coast’ and there are a number of historic walking trails you can follow to learn more about its maritime history. The port here is also one of the busiest in Victoria and you can see the fisherman unloading their catch of crayfish and abalone. This is also where you can take a cruise to Lady Julia Percy Island to see the seal colony.
