Location
The inn sits on a hillside in the small community of Port Rexton, one of 12 similar small fishing villages that make up the larger community of Trinity Bight (“bight” meaning the bend in a coastline forming an open bay). Trinity is located on the Bonavista Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland, and Fishers’ Loft itself is about three hours’ drive from St John’s International Airport. Flights to St John’s arrive regularly from London, New York, and most major Canadian cities. Travellers also have the option of taking the ferry to St Johns and other locations on the island from the Canadian mainland.
Accommodation
Opened 20 years ago as a four-room B&B, Fishers’ Loft has gradually expanded to meet rising demand and now comprises several hillside buildings containing 33 rooms and suites. The buildings reflect traditional regional architecture and furniture in the rooms is handcrafted by a local prizewinning artisan. There are three types of room available (Garden, Hilltop, and Treetop) and all contain en-suite bathroom, TV, WiFi, original artwork, and complimentary hiking stick and binoculars. Expansive views of Ship Cove and Trinity Bay can be enjoyed from the Hilltop and Treetop rooms and it is not uncommon to spot icebergs and whales breaching from your window.
Dining
The licensed dining room looks out over the community of Port Rexton and the bay beyond, and sits alongside the Inn’s own garden and greenhouse. Their home-grown fruit and vegetables determine the shape of the seasonally shifting menu and are supplemented by locally-sourced mushrooms, berries and seafood. Breakfast is served between 8 and 10 and is preceded on request by complimentary tea or coffee delivered to your room from 7. There are two seatings at dinner in the evening (5:15 and 7:30) to suit guests’ differing needs. The dinner is four-course and dietary restrictions can be accommodated with advance notice.
Facilities
A favoured location of film and TV directors (e.g. The Shipping News), the rugged and picturesque surrounds of Trinity Bight offer guests easy access to a wealth of walking and hiking opportunities. Ten minutes’ walk from the Inn, you can join the celebrated Skerwink Coastal Trail, named by Travel & Leisure magazine as one of the top trails in Canada. The Inn can offer advice and directions to suit guests’ energy and ambition and also organise hikes along forest trails to remote and abandoned fishing villages. The Inn is also perfectly located for whale watching or you can take boat tours to the deserted 19th century community of British Harbour; speak to our consultants to pre-book.
