Location
Médoc vines and the Gironde estuary surround this revamped retreat, 35 miles (56 kilometres) northwest of Bordeaux along the D2 wine road – the oenophile's Route 66. A glorious address for losing yourself in the countryside, the five-acre grounds offer centuries-old cedar trees and postcard-worthy views of boat silhouettes appearing to sail over the vineyard. There is no public transport, so your own wheels are vital for exploring (complimentary electric bikes can be hired), whilst the Château Cos d'Estournel winery is a 30-minute walk away.
Accommodation
Spread over two floors, many of the 14 impeccably styled rooms afford vineyard views, and all feature vintage-style furniture and touches of brass for a traditional feel. Space is a little tight but easily compensated for by the earthy, vine-inspired colour palette, while beautiful ceiling cornices, and satin-smooth curtains lend a dash of luxury – something you might expect from designer Alex Michaelis.
Swish bathrooms are open-plan; a division made by the curved rain showers inspired by oak barrels – and, if you reserve the Estournel room, you'll be graced with a freestanding tub. Fluffy robes and slippers are provided
Dining
Buffet breakfast is a feast of France with croissants, pastries, fruits, yogurts, and a wide range of cheeses. Boiled, scrambled, fried eggs or omelettes are also available by request. At dinner, gourmet-standard dishes come exquisitely presented, and feature produce grown or reared on-site – the likes of 63-degree egg with truffle, duck breast with carrot and fennel, and walnut crumble with figs. The open kitchen is freely accessible for those wishing to discover the secrets of the chef.
Facilities
There's no swimming pool or spa, but that leaves you free to appreciate the magnificent grounds, spend lazy afternoons on the sun-soaked terrace, or curl up with a book in the well-stocked library.
