Location
Set in a secluded woodland above the Lyngen Fjord and surrounded by some of the most beautiful coastal scenery ever seen, Lyngen Lodge offers stunning panoramas, a host of activities and incredible chances of seeing the Northern Lights in winter. Tromso, Norway’s largest city inside the Arctic Circle, is about three hours away by road and offers cutting-edge restaurants and more pubs per capita than any other town in Norway.
Accommodation
Catering to just 18 guests in eight en-suite twin and double bedrooms with triple and single options, the timber-framed, grass-roofed lodge offers panoramic views of the Lyngen Fjord and Lyngen Alps. Pastel colours, stone, reindeer pelts and wooden furnishings lend interiors a natural, earthy feel. Large panoramic windows seem to invite the Lyngen Alps inside, while an open, stone fireplace creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere in the main lodge building. Lodge amenities include a fully licenced bar, dining room, library, sauna and outdoor jacuzzi – a popular spot when the Northern Lights come a calling.
Dining
Accommodation is provided on a full-board basis and the imaginative menus focus on locally sourced ingredients with Norwegian flavours at their heart. Although menus change often, regular favourites include reindeer, lamb, grilled Arctic char, salmon, halibut, herring, king crab and more recipes for cod than there are days in the month. There is also a fully licenced bar stocking a good range of wines, champagnes and spirits.
Facilities
Activities here are plentiful and expertly run. In winter, try your hand at dogsledding, snowshoeing or snowmobiling across a frozen lake for a spot of ice fishing. The skiing is also superb – the Norwegian national ski team train here – and it’s one of the few places on earth where you can ski from summit to the sea. Fishing and hiking are wonderful summer options, as are cruises on the fjord to spot whales, seals and sea eagles.
