Location

The Yeatman is found within historic Vila Nova de Gaia, a district that lines the south side of the Douro River. It’s here that port houses have aged their valuable wine for over three centuries, many owned by British merchant families that took advantage of Gaia’s riverside setting. In fact, thanks to the city’s low profile, the hotel enjoys spectacular views, over the waters, to Porto’s historic centre. It’s all perfectly accessible, just a 20 minute drive from the international airport while nearby services bring connect you with the rest of the country. Between the hotel and riverfront is the impressive World of Wine (WOW) cultural district, home to 7 museums and 12 restaurants dedicated to the pleasures of fine food and wine.

Accommodation

Despite the Yeatman’s heritage surrounds, the hotel is firmly grounded in the contemporary, having opened in August 2010. Indeed, all rooms are wrapped up in a delightfully understated style with designer furnishings complemented by nods to the city’s rich past in local artwork, artefacts and traditional Portuguese ceramic tiles. However, perhaps the most impressive feature of the hotel’s 82 guest rooms is their large, private balconies and terraces – each enjoying spectacular views over the River Douro and onto the terracotta roofs of Porto’s historic centre. Lastly, the suites are particularly indulgent, featuring generously sized living areas, chic four poster beds and floor-to-ceiling panoramas.

Dining

In a country of truly esteemed gastronomy, it’s high praise to say that the Yeatman’s dining options stand out. Its signature offering is the only restaurant in Porto to have garnered two Michelin stars. Across carefully curated menus, chef Ricardo Costa interprets Portugal’s classic flavours with his trademark innovation – the seafood is particularly good. The tasting courses are also highly recommended. For something special, perhaps opt for a private dining experience. Choose between wine cellar and al fresco settings as you’re guided through an individually tailored dinner.

Facilities

This being a Michelin-starred destination in Porto, you won’t be surprised to learn that the Yeatman offers a range of wine tasting experiences, hosted in the hotel’s cellars. The commitment even continues to the spa where a range of skincare products sourced from vines is used in therapies. Traditionalists shouldn’t worry, however; there’s a variety of recognisable treatments available, too, along with Roman baths, saunas, a hammam, gym and both an indoor and outdoor infinity pool that share views of the entire city. In the latter, there’s also the option of light meals and cocktails – also served in the designer bar.
