Introduction
Pollença is a charming little town at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain chain in the north of Mallorca, close to Pollença Bay. It's reached via a scenic drive across the island from Palma airport, with family friendly beaches nearby and good walking to be had along the coast and in the surrounding mountains.
Pollença was founded in the 13th century, with an inland location intended to deter marauding pirates. While many of its buildings date from a few centuries later, the Church of Our Lady of the Angels, built by the Knights Templar and dominating the Plaça Major in the centre of Pollença, is one of the medieval landmarks that remain. The plaza is a focal point in the town, with cafes and a weekend market. From here, 365 stone steps lead to the hilltop El Calvari chapel - the walk to the top rewarded by lovely views across the town, the valley and Pollença Bay.
The challenging Alcanada golf course nearby is one of a multitude of excellent golf courses on Mallorca, and a popular reason to stay in the Pollença area. Another highlight is the drive to the Cap de Formentor, a rugged peninsula noted for its sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs and lookout points along the road that leads to its tip.
