About

Recommended for:
City | History & culture | Natural world | Self-drive | Summer

This fly-drive holiday takes in western Sweden’s most scenic routes, exploring its rich local history and tempting regional cuisine. It all begins with two nights in the heart of Gothenburg, staying at a brand-new hotel with all the city’s sights on your doorstep. Pick up a transport pass to make the most of your stay as you hop between eclectic neighbourhoods, local restaurants and the natural delights of the city’s archipelago and forest surrounds. You’ll then move up the coast to stay at three elegant hotels, each known for its outstanding service, gourmet food and traditional country house charm.

Day by day itinerary

Days 1-2
UK to Gothenburg

Fly to Gothenburg and transfer to the Clarion Hotel Draken, a brand new, centrally located hotel offering where movie-themed rooms reflect the location's history as a cinema, while rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and a stunning rooftop restaurant show off magnificent city views. Located in the heart of the city, you'll also be within walking distance of the station, the Opera House and many of Gothenburg’s best shops and restaurants. Take a boat trip along the canals, explore the city's excellent museums – the Universeum is a must – and browse through the arts and crafts shops in the old city. Gothenburg's citizens enjoy 175 square metres each of green space, so be sure to visit some of the city's beautiful parks and botanical gardens, which in turn lead to a vast region of forests and lakes. Throughout the warmer months, the nearby archipelago is a delight.

Day 8
Departure

Your adventures in west Sweden come to an end. Drive back to Gothenburg's international airport in time for your onward flight to the UK.

More time?

There are few better ways to explore the landscapes of rural Sweden than by taking a cruise along the 19th century Gota Canal, which stretches from Gothenburg to Stockholm via an interconnecting series of canals, rivers and lakes.
