Location
The Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel is nestled among fragrant lemon groves on the premises of a 13th-century Capuchin convent, built into a cliffside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. In fact, several of the original medieval structures remain in place today, including the chapel and the cloisters, which imbue the property with an aura of historical grandeur. While its location is delightfully peaceful, it’s also within easy walking distance of Amalfi’s charming town centre – a leisurely 10-minute stroll away. And of course, it’s superbly placed for exploring the rest of the Amalfi Coast and its many beautiful cliffside villages.
Accommodation
Almost all of the 52 rooms and suites face out towards the sea and feature the likes of terracotta tiling, whitewashed walls, marble-tiled bathrooms and chic, minimalist furnishings. Luxurious touches include a pillow menu, premium toiletries and espresso coffee machines, while individually-controlled air conditioning comes as standard. Premium rooms also offer private balconies. The suites are even more opulent and spacious, with some boasting their own terrace and Jacuzzi – the perfect spot from which to take in those glorious Amalfi Coast sunsets.
Dining
The signature restaurant is Dei Cappuccini, which serves a combination of delicious continental and cooked dishes for breakfast and contemporary interpretations of traditional Italian and Mediterranean cuisine for dinner, including fresh, locally sourced seafood and produce from the convent’s gardens – complemented, of course, by a vast selection of quality wines and proseccos. Lunch takes place at La Locanda Della Canonica, where you can enjoy authentic, wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas in a stunning cliffside setting.
Facilities
Laid-back days here are typically spent basking in the sunshine by the sea-facing infinity pool, indulging in the fabulous wellness facilities at the Anantara Spa (including a sauna, a hammam and a steam room) and unwinding on the flower-lined terraces while taking in the magnificent views. You may also wish to elevate your experience with a liquor-tasting evening, a cooking masterclass, a mozzarella-making workshop or a ceramics painting course. Feeling active? You’ll find a small but well-equipped outdoor gym on the fifth floor, where you can work out accompanied by a cooling sea breeze and the scent of orange and lemon groves. A tour of the convent’s original chapel and cloisters, meanwhile, is not to be missed, giving you a deeper appreciation of the property’s history and cultural significance over the centuries.
