Athénée Palace Hilton, Bucharest

The Athénée in Bucharest is one of the grand dames of European style. Gloriously Art Nouveau, with old school service that soothes the soul, it’s an uninterrupted link to a time of elegance. 

The imposing building has stood staunch and sophisticated through bombings and earthquakes and wars and all manner of history. Placed in pole position to witness most of Romania’s seismic events in the past, in the present it’s a central fixture in the new order of buzzing Bucharest. The hotel sits right on Revolution Square, where the uprising against Ceausescu took place. It’s also the site of Bucharest’s most significant buildings, including the concert hall and the Art Museum. 

Within its walls, there’s a certain amount of history too. The Athénée was a strategic spot for cold war espionage, each room tapped. Now it’s a strategic spot for exploring the old and new attractions of a remarkable city. The Old Town is within striding distance, with a myriad of hip bars, cafes and restaurants to delight in. Back within the solid rock walls and under the exquisite chandeliers, a world of old opulence and retro-decor spacious bedrooms awaits. Food and drink meet the old Europe mark too – there’s an Italian style kitchen, a French flavour at the Café Athénée, and a back to wartime basics and glamour in the English Bar, where both sides lit cigars and spoke of secrets. Now there’s an extensive whisky menu and a short menu of English classics.
