Behold the latest unique offering in the world of luxury safari lodges: Kruger Shalati. Perched high on a railway bridge in the heart of South Africa's iconic Kruger National Park, this re-envisioned train pays homage to the safari-goers of yesteryear – in the 1920s, when they were first allowed to explore the area, their train would park overnight in the very spot where Kruger Shalati now lies.
Sitting high above the Sabie river, 30 rooms, 24 carriage rooms and six ‘Bridge House Rooms’ are adorned with local arts and crafts in traditional African design alongside ultra-contemporary touches, with free-standing baths and floor-to-ceiling glass walls that provide uninterrupted views. Come evening, enjoy sundowners and gourmet meals – all included (as well as breakfast and house drinks) – alongside panoramic vistas of the park and river below.
Naturally, though, it’s the world below that holds most appeal; spot some of Kruger’s 508 bird species and 147 mammals – including the Big Five – directly from your room and with included game drives. When you’re not out exploring, the hotel's spectacular overhanging pool with comfortable loungers and a sprawling deck are the perfect place to relax. You’re also just moments from Kruger Station, the Stevenson Hamilton memorial library that celebrates the first warden of Kruger National Park and even a golf course.
