River cruise
Entirely redesigned in 2020, La Venezia is a vision of Murano glass, rich Fortuny fabrics and gilded patterns, perfectly siting it among Venice’s myriad delights. It’s a sophisticated style that plays out everywhere from the four restaurants and bars to the sundeck, spa and welcoming cabins. With all river-view staterooms, it’s one of Uniworld’s latest additions to its award-winning top tier of ships.
Throughout the all-inclusive experience you can expect the finest of service. A recent Wexas inspection was delighted with the sommelier-recommended wines and found the near-nightly in-room gifts a lovely touch. Alongside the knowledgeable, humourful guiding on the included excursions, this excellent level of service is perhaps best experienced in the restaurants and bars.
The largest, Rialto’s, is inspired by the Orient Express, offering fine Venetian fare, with Wexas specialists raving about the whole-roast salmon. Then, Cielo’s Pizzeria offers a more relaxed, al-fresco experience with gorgeous deck views, a salad bar and wood-fired favourites. In turn, an upgrade to intimate La Cantinetta is all about a fine, private dining. The experience begins earlier in the day, with guests accompanying their chef to the famous Rialto food market to pick up the likes of fresh Adriatic fish and fine Italian cheeses.
However, it’s often Hari’s Bar that becomes the ship’s focus, with its open-bar cocktails and prosecco enjoyed on beautifully upholstered seating – perfect for taking in the live entertainment. Its panini bar is a further favourite. Outside of the dining areas, the huge sun deck is the ideal spot to watch the world go by, while the compact fitness centre and the spa treatments are welcome additions. Wherever you are, however, the ship’s interior has the same high design standards, influenced by local Venetian design house, Fortuny. They’re renowned for their handmade fabrics whose creation is still a closely held company secret.
Cabins
Deluxe Stateroom
The real joy of river cruising is being able to watch as river life plays out in front of you as you go. And, with their picture windows, the Deluxe stateroom offerings are perfect. They even invite a little of their Italian setting in, with Venetian patterns evident across the well-proportioned closets and marbled bathrooms. Here, you’ll also fine premium Asprey amenities and a hairdryer, along with cosy bathrobes and slippers. As tested by our cruise specialists, the beds, hand-made in the UK, are excellent. Individual climate-control thermostats, a safe and a flat-screen TV with infotainment centre round off facilities.
French Balcony Stateroom
This is our recommended stateroom. Gazing out over the Venice Lagoon’s unique scenes is a joy in itself, and being able to open up onto river delights is a sheer delight. Then, back inside, you’ll have all of Uniworld’s usual favourites. Marbled bathrooms with fine Asprey bath and body products also include plush towels, bathrobes and slippers, along with the obligatory hairdryer. Then, in the beautifully patterned bedroom – where you’ll find the in-built closets – you’ll enjoy the ship’s signature beds and infotainment TV, while the individual-control thermostat, safe and telephone complete the list.
Suite
Although very generously proportioned, perhaps the standout attraction of La Venezia’s suites is the in-suite butler service. With anticipatory excellence, your butler will be on hand to offer everything from packing and unpacking assistance to shoe shining and complimentary laundry. The in-room dining service also ranges from breakfasts and evening snacks to daily fruit and cookie plates. It’s all washed down with the likes of the Nespresso coffee machine and fine teas, along with a fully stocked minibar and a bottle of wine upon arrival – best paired with views from the French balcony. Then, marbled bathrooms come with luxury amenities, backlit mirror and towel warmers, while the bedroom comes exquisitely dressed in dark lacquerware and all the usual fine facilities, including flat-screen TV and beds hand-made in the UK.
Grand Suite
Exactly twice the size of the Deluxe staterooms, the Grand Suite comes with a French balcony and delightful living room. Here, plush seating and a beautifully designed armchair are perfect for taking in the views – perhaps with a drink from the Nespresso coffee machine, fully stocked minibar or the bottle of wine, provided on arrival. This is all facilitated by the excellent in-suite butler service, on hand to offer a complimentary shoe shine, laundry and packing or unpacking service. There’s also everything from in-room breakfast to daily fruit, cookies and evening snacks. Moving on from the ornate bedroom and living room, the marbled bathroom also features a separate bathtub, along with the usual high standard of amenities.
