Location
Kirkenes is a small town in remote, north-eastern Norway that acts as a gateway to eastern Finnmark’s exotic landscape. Located just 15km from the Russian-Norwegian border, you’ll see street signs in Cyrillic script and Russian fisherman amongst the town’s trans-border visitors. The frontier museum brings the town’s rich history to life with special displays on Kirkenes’s involvement in WWII. Outside the city limits, catch spectacular views of the northern lights and midnight sun.
Accommodation
Thon Hotel Kirkenes brings modern accommodation to the town’s central quay. Each room has free wireless internet access, an en suite bathroom, a min-bar and a flat-screen TV pre-loaded with a selection of movies. Superior rooms are larger and come with a wider range of toiletries and complimentary travellers magazines. The hotel’s suite includes a separate living area and large-corner windows with impressive views. It also features a coffee machine, chocolates and fresh flowers.
Dining
The excellent complimentary buffet breakfast is served in the hotel’s ground floor restaurant and offers a broad selection of spreads, hot dishes, bread, fresh fruit, cereals, milk, juice and freshly brewed coffee. It has everything to prepare you for the Norwegian cold. Due to Kirkenes’s remote location, the a la carte lunch and dinner menus use exclusively local ingredients. Expect a mixture of local and international dishes with Norwegian favourites such as meatballs and smoked meats and fishes featuring heavily. In the summer, meals are served under the midnight sun on the outdoor terrace overlooking the fjord’s waterfront. You can also enjoy a drink in the hotel’s bar.
Facilities
The hotel puts on a range of organised tours and activities to take full advantage of its enviable location. There are snowmobile, ATV and dog sledging safaris to explore Finnmark’s wildlife and stunning landscape. Closer to home there’s king crab potting and fishing in the border river and fjord. The Gabba Reindeer & Husky Park offers you the chance to get up close and personal with some of Norway’s favourite animals. Visitors can enjoy the northern lights in the winter, or the midnight sun in summer, as a stunning backdrop to these unique activities.
