Location
Positioned in the foothills of the Sintra Mountains, the Tivoli Palácio enjoys spectacular views over the green countryside that rings Lisbon. It even overlooks two of the region’s highlights, the medieval battlements of the 8th century Moorish Castle and the Romanesque Pena Palace – a true fairytale castle. And they’re but two of the headlines, with plenty more palaces and castles just a short drive away. You’ll also have a pair of idyllic beaches within easy reach, while Lisbon itself is only a 40 minutes’ drive away.
Accommodation
In keeping with its architecture’s period good looks, this 18th century palace is not just for show. To match the extravagance of its ballroom, its accommodation is furnished to excess, with tapestries and frescoes reflecting the building’s rich history. In turn, draping curtains draw back to reveal views over the region and the hotel’s gardens. Wooden flooring and muted pastel tones round off the aesthetic, while Nespresso coffee machines add in more contemporary comforts. Upgrades mix in suite living and giant mountain views.
Dining
Eating at Tivoli Palácio is equally extravagant; you’ll dine under magnificent frescoes and historic paintings at the Seteais Restaurant while enjoying sweeping views over the palace’s manicured gardens. You’ll enjoy traditional regional favourites with innovative twists in dishes such as pork cheek confit with potato gratin, scallops and shrimp risotto, and duck escabeche with marinated mushrooms and thyme croutons. You’ll also have the option of a private dining experience in the hotel’s grounds.
Facilities
At Tivoli Palácio, step back to the joys of yesteryear by idling away the hours with its mazes, relaxing by the pool or simply strolling through the gardens. There’s even the chance to enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride in the surrounding countryside; for something more up-to-date consider hiring a 1930s sidecar replica to zoom around Sintra’s storybook heritage. Return to a massage in the hotel’s gardens or cocktails served on the bar terrace. From here, you’ll enjoy yet more of those mountain views as your pore over the extensive wine list.
