Introduction
The Liwonde National Park, to the south of Lake Malawi, is a classic African wildlife safari park. It stretches along the banks of the Shire River, an area of diverse vegetation where swamps and lagoons attract animals from the drier surrounding grassland and where baobab trees stamp vivid silhouettes on the horizon.
The park is home to hippos, elephants, crocodile and antelopes and sometimes prides of visiting lions. Black rhino are also found in Liwonde National Park, though sadly they are rarely spotted due to diminishing numbers. Invest time, camping out in a park lodge, cross your fingers and you might catch a glimpse.
