Introduction
Voss is a picturesque mountain resort in Norway's beautiful western fjords region, which has firmly established itself as a major hub for adventure tourism and winter sports. Overlooking Vangsvatnet Lake and ringed by forested hills, Voss also benefits from its position on the road and rail route between Bergen and Oslo - which makes it a popular and convenient stop-off during self-drive itineraries or tailor-made ‘Norway in a nutshell' tours.
Driving into Voss is especially memorable via the Stalheimskleiva Mountain Road, a steep route with 13 hairpin bends and dizzying views. It passes two great waterfalls, Stalheimsfossen and Sivlefossen, 126 metres and 142 metres tall respectively. Spectacular views can also be enjoyed from Hanguren Mountain, reached via the Hangursbanen cable car. The mountain is often used as a starting point for hiking and mountain biking, while white-water rafting, sea kayaking, glacier walks and skydiving are some of the other adventure sports that can be tried here.
The spiralling Flam railway, which starts in nearby Myrdal and passes through narrow tunnels and past waterfalls and steep rock faces on its way down the Flam valley, is also not to be missed while you're staying in Voss.
