Gothenburg

Visit Gothenburg

Introduction

Gothenburg enjoys a position of national acclaim as one of Sweden's most beautiful cities. With a far more relaxed atmosphere than rival city Stockholm, Gothenburg also boasts better links to the rest of Europe, in particular Copenhagen.

Most of the main attractions can be found south of the Gӧta River, which bisects its way through the heart of the city. The beautiful architecture and charming cafes you'll discover as you wander streets offer a welcoming and exciting alternative to the usual city break destination.

Where better to start your exploration of the old town than Gustov Adolf Square (named after the town's founder), from here the city will unfold before you with all the main attractions easy walking distance away. The Maritime and City Museum are excellent as is the city shopping district and opera house.

Sweden is famous for being at the cutting edge of modern design and Rӧhssa Design Museum is perfect for admirers of creativity and ingenuity. Look out for the Carl Milles' Poseidon statue in Gӧtsplasen, discover the lively area of Avenyn, or head west to the historic cobbled streets of Haga.

Alternatively embark on a boat journey and visit the Bohuslän Coast or the island town of Marstrand both perfect retreats during the idyllic summer months.
