Located just ten minutes’ snowmobile ride from the centre of Longyearbyen, Svalbard’s largest permanent settlement, this ultra-chic lodge, formerly the Spitsbergen Hotel, enjoys enviable views over the town and the nearby Lars glacier. Indeed, it’s the perfect base for adventures into Svalbard’s Arctic wilds.
The lodge has 88 fully renovated en-suite rooms, with those on the upper floor looking tout across the town and its icy surrounds. All rooms come with TV, complimentary internet, coffee machines, bathrobe and slippers and full buffet breakfast; suites also have their own private sitting area, ideal for families and larger groups.
In Svalbard’s frosty climates, hearty and wholesome meals are the perfect way to set yourself up for days of adventure. And, the delicious breakfasts at the Spitsbergen Hotel are certainly testament to the theory. In the afternoons, freshly baked waffles are served by an open fire, and there's a pub, perfect for a celebratory drink and a light meal. Meanwhile, the more formal Funktionærmessen restaurant – our favourite Longyearbyen dining spot – offers a tasting menu and French-inspired cuisine as well as selection of dishes inspired by the Arctic.
