Days 3-4
Elvas: Castles & forts

Travel to the north-eastern point of the Alentejo region today, as you stay in the Torre de Palma wine hotel, near to the historically fortified city of Elvas. Dating back to 1338, the remains of the ancient house were restored in 2014 to provide a unique and atmospheric stay. Over the next two days, explore nearby Elvas, relax with your desired spa treatments or choose from a number of the hotel's wine-inspired tastings and courses.

Away from the hotel's grounds, Elvas' historic fortifications, once crucial for defence, have been beautifully preserved and now serve as a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can stroll along the city walls, explore the ancient castle and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The town's proximity to Spain is evident from the glimpse of Badajoz, the nearest Spanish city, visible from the castle's heights.

Days 5-6
Évora: In the footsteps of Romans & royals

After breakfast, head south to the historic city of Évora and settle in for a stay at the historic Convento do Espinheiro, a mere 2 kilometres from the city's vibrant centre. Nestled within 23 acres of jaw-dropping countryside, this exquisite hotel offers quintessential Alentejo charm. The recent renovation has transformed this 15th-century convent while preserving elements of its timeless character. Visit the historic convent's Gothic cistern, now transformed into a wine bar or take a refreshing dip in the hotel's inviting pool.

During your stay, opt to explore nearby Évora on foot, wandering through its whitewashed streets and letting its historic monuments tell stories of this ancient city. The tranquil atmosphere and welcoming locals make it easy to understand why Évora, dating back to Roman times, was chosen as a royal residence by Portuguese kings in the 15th century. This royal patronage contributed to its cultural significance and development. Évora's well-preserved 16th- to 18th-century urban centre and rich history led to its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Days 7-8
Malhadinha estate & Beja

Today's drive takes you south, through rolling plains, verdant vineyards, olive plantations and golden wheat fields, towards the secluded haven of Malhadinha Nova, a stunning Relais & Châteaux estate in the heart of Alentejo. Once a working farm, it has been transformed into a luxurious retreat that celebrates both its rural heritage and modern design. Settle into your modern, exclusive room, suite or villa before an afternoon spent unwinding by the gorgeous infinity pool, indulging in a rejuvenating spa treatment, or exploring the estate's extensive grounds on horseback. Malhadinha Nova is renowned for its exceptional wines, particularly its reds. The estate's vineyards, bathed in the warm Alentejo sun, produce grapes that are rich in flavour and complexity. The signature red, Malhadinha, is a powerful and elegant wine, with notes of dark fruit, spice, and oak. It's a perfect pairing for the gourmet dinners served at its namesake Michelin-starred restaurant, where the flavours of the Alentejo are celebrated.

Beyond the estate's walls, a world of cultural and historical treasures awaits. Beja, a charming city steeped in history, is a delightful day trip. Discover a blend of Roman, medieval and Moorish influences, visiting the impressively formidable Castelo de Menagem or the Gothic cathedral, Sé de Beja. For a taste of local life, head to the Mercado Municipal de Beja. This bustling market is a feast for the senses, with stalls overflowing with fresh produce, local delicacies and handcrafted goods. Back at the estate, guided tours of the vineyards and winery are available, with the chance to learn about the winemaking process from grape to glass.

Your final stop is Sublime Comporta – a stylish retreat tucked away amidst the pristine dunes and pine forests of the Alentejo coast. Check into your luxurious accommodation before soaking up the sun by the infinity pool. Just seconds from one of Portugal's best beaches, it is perfectly placed for leisurely strolls along its pristine golden sands. With options of private yoga sessions or thrilling water sports adventures such as surfing, paddle boarding or kayaking, there's plenty of time to let your hair down. Conclude the day with a romantic dinner at the hotel's fine-dining restaurant, indulging in gourmet cuisine paired with local wines. Expect razor clams and oysters and catches of the day garnished with herbs from the hotel’s vegetable garden. On your second day, explore the stunning coastal landscapes on horseback, guided by expert equestrians and perhaps pamper yourself with a relaxing spa treatment, such as a massage or facial, at the hotel's luxurious spa.
