Location
Fonteverde sits amidst vineyards and olive trees in the enchanting Val d’Orcia – a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its breathtaking landscapes and historical charm. This region epitomises the beauty of the Italian countryside, with rolling hills, cypress-lined roads and picturesque medieval villages dotting the horizon. Fonteverde is perfectly positioned for day trips to some of Tuscany’s most iconic hilltop towns, such as Montepulciano, Pienza and Montalcino, famous for their architecture, history, and world-class wines. And, despite its secluded setting, Fonteverde is conveniently accessible about an hour and a half from Florence and two hours from Rome by car.
Accommodation
The rooms and suites at Fonteverde pay homage to the Renaissance era, with furnishings, shapes and materials evoking memories of the palace’s past. Guests can choose from cosy Superior Rooms with large windows and warm Tuscan tones, and elegant Deluxe Rooms with views across the valley. Some rooms offer private balconies or terraces opening out onto views of the Val d’Orcia hills and Mount Amiata, the perfect spot to savour an evening drink. And, the suites are particularly luxurious with spacious living areas and décor in keeping with ancient Tuscan churches. Features such as travertine marble bathrooms, Tuscan terracotta flooring and moulded headboards are reminiscent of the palace’s history.
Dining
Restaurant La Corte is the perfect setting for relaxed breakfasts and lunches, with large windows opening out onto the expansive terrace. Guests can start the day with a sumptuous breakfast and savour light lunches based on traditional Tuscan and Mediterranean flavours. Then, when evening comes around, Ferdinando I Restaurant showcases Chef Vincenzo Balzano’s creativity with an exciting array of fresh, local dishes designed to complement the wellness focus of the retreat. Expect an enchanting ambience inside the Renaissance-era portico with stunning views of the Val d’Orcia’s rolling hills. Il Falconiere Bar is the perfect setting to sample some of Tuscany’s most celebrated wines, or savour an expertly crafted cocktail.
Facilities
The hotel's standout feature is undoubtedly its dedication to wellness, with a remarkable series of indoor and outdoor thermal pools that truly impress. Fed by the region’s natural hot springs, the pools are rich in minerals and prized for their therapeutic benefits. Guests can enjoy state-of-the-art spa facilities including an extensive menu of indulgent treatments, focussing on age-old Mediterranean therapies. For outdoor enthusiasts there are opportunities for hiking and biking across the surrounding countryside and charming villages. Visits to local vineyards for wine and olive oil tasting can be arranged, along with truffle hunting and a guided tour of the sacred baths of San Casciano is not to be missed.
