Location
Verbania – billed as the most liveable town in Italy – is the host to this historic classic. It’s an ideal base for exploring the lake with its cycling routes, ferry ports and picturesque gardens, including the Grand Hotel Majestic’s. Here, palm trees and colourful flowers, set atop a promontory, look over a private sandy beach to the Piedmont coast of Lago Maggiore. You’ll be able to look over its islands, including San Giovanni where the noble Borromeo family keeps their summer residence. On your lakeside strolls you can even reach the charming township of Pallanza and further remarkable gardens at Villa Taranto.
Accommodation
Built in 1870, the Grand Hotel Majestic is a stunning example of renewed Belle Époque architecture, exemplified by its adorned halls and spectacular lakefront terrace. All rooms are classically styled, with many featuring balcony views of the lake. Push back the draping swag curtains for a panorama of shimmering waters framed by rolling hills. Whatever room type you choose, richly coloured Italian fabrics adorn the seating and beds, picked out against whitewashed walls. Suites add in dark wood opulence, writing desks, a duplex layout and glimpses of the Borromean Islands.
Dining
Le Beola, the hotel’s main restaurant, pampers guests with superb service and accompanies each meal with yet more views over Lago Maggiore – something shared by its summertime verandah counterpart, La Beola. Both recreate traditional flavours with modern flare, using only the highest quality, seasonal ingredients. It’s all watched over by Danilo Bortolin, who’s worked in some of the finest European kitchens including Il Piccolo Lago, winning the restaurant two Michelin stars.
Facilities
A trip to the Italian lakes is all about relaxation, whether it’s lazy laps in the heated indoor pool, gentle strolls in the gardens, swimming in the lake or unwinding on the hotel’s private slice of beach. The spa is particularly good, with everything from Ayurvedic massages to beauty treatments available. For those looking for something more active, play a set on the hotel’s tennis court or make use of the well-equipped gym. You can also head out and explore, making use of a rental boat or kayak.
