Location
An exclusive peninsula juts out alone into the picturesque Lake Garda’s southern stretches. After entering through an impressive turreted gate – part of the 13th century Scaliger Castle – you’ll arrive at Sirmione, a historic centre where Roman ruins feature alongside a famous hot spring. At its heart is Villa Cortine, itself set in five hectares of parkland where palm fronds, stone statues and reaching conifer trees make for atmospheric walks. A promenade brings you further afield to the lake for bike rides, boat trips and horse rides.
Accommodation
Dating back to 1898, first impressions of this luxurious villa are made with its grand neoclassical front, supported by an array of giant columns. The extravagance continues into the 54 rooms where Veronese marble, stained glass, Murano chandeliers and beautiful frescoes look down on the original, gilded furniture and hardwood floors. All face the hotel’s magnificent gardens, glimpsing sights of Lake Garda through the trees. Upgrade for lake-view terraces and suite living.
Dining
When travelling in Italy, food is always a highlight and Villa Cortine is no exception. Chefs choose only the best ingredients, showcasing local flavours across menus that balance both antique tradition and modern, sophisticated influences. As such, you can expect such tortelli and cannellone favourites to come immaculately plated in today’s high style. For lighter fare, perhaps opt for a selection of patissier-baked delights accompanied by fine teas.
Facilities
In spite of the hotel’s peninsular sliver setting, its park still manages to host a palm tree-fringed clay tennis court, a lakeview swimming pool and a private pier complete with sun loungers. If the latter inspires, consider hiring a skippered boat to explore the lake further. Perhaps end your meals with a cocktail or a selection from the American Bar’s whisky and cognac selections, served in the lounge, terrace or, come the summer, on the pier.
