Introduction
Southern Sweden could not represent more of a contrast to the cold north of the country if it tried. With rolling farmland and endless sandy beaches, this region is far removed from the stereotypical Arctic image synonymous with Scandinavia.
Historically this has been a region under siege with the area of Skane constantly fought over by Denmark and Sweden. These days the long anticipated Øresunds Link connects the two areas once again, coupling the popular city destination of Malmo to mainland Denmark.
Also situated in the southern region of Sweden is the island of Gotland. Although nowadays a popular retreat for the elite of Stockholm this island maintains a close relationship with its history through annual festivals and celebrations.
