Location
Casa Fantini is a pleasingly stylish spot on Lake Orta’s western shore. Expect floor-to-ceiling glass windows and contemporary interiors, with comfy sofas, designer furnishings and large potted plants. Sip on superbly crafted cocktails at the bar or sit back by the stylish minimalist swimming pool.
Unlike most hotels on Lake Orta that are clustered in and around Orta San Giulio, Casa Fantini is tucked away on the western shore of the lake in the quiet village of Pella. You’re well away from the tourist crowds here, in a peaceful location a stone’s throw away from the lakefront – ideal if you’re after an authentic taster of lake life. Boat services travel across the water to Orta San Giulio and the lake island from the public dock by the hotel.
Accommodation
Rooms are contemporary and attractive, with bespoke Italian furnishings and raw wool textiles. Hemp carpets in shades of blue, ochre or green add a splash of colour, while blue lacquered glass panels on the wardrobes echo the hues of the lake. All rooms have balconies or terraces with views of the garden, the lake and pretty Isola San Giulio.
Particular attention has been paid to the bathrooms (the hotel management own Fantini Rubinetti, a renowned Italian company that produces taps), with different designer taps, sinks, bidets and showerheads selected for each room. In some, you’ll find quirky 1970’s designer taps, while in others you’ll come across modern steel fittings. Showers all have in-built steam rooms, and amenities are by eco-friendly company Comfort Zone that are made with natural ingredients.
Dining
Breakfast is excellent, and served until midday anywhere on the property. There’s a well-thought out selection of local ingredients, including delicious local cold cuts and cheeses (the buffalo camembert is exquisite) from farms nearby, and mini croissants and cakes from a patisserie in town. There are plenty of healthy options too, including fruit salad and strawberry coulis with granola and yogurt.
A complimentary aperitivo with local wines is offered to guests, while at Blu Lago Café, expert mixologists rustle up superb creative cocktails. The food is excellent; it’s authentic home cooking with a contemporary touch; try the agnolotti del plin, traditional Piemontese pasta pockets stuffed with pork, chicken and rabbit.
Facilities
Reception staff are friendly and helpful, and bartenders in the café and bar can guide guests through the well-thought-out drinks menu. The delightful owner Daniela Fantini is often at the property to greet guests and share her personal suggestions on what to see and do. Staff can organise all manner of activities, from guided tours of the island of San Giulio to hikes and treks in the lake area. In the garden, you’ll find a small but stylish heated swimming pool with counter current jets and three neck waterfalls, and in-room massages can be organised. There’s free parking for guests a short walk away from the hotel.
