Introduction
Marrakech is, for many, Morocco's most exciting city. This hectic melting pot of colours, flavours, sights and smells has been a central trading post for centuries. Still today, it's the best place to do some serious shopping, and a choice of luxurious Moroccan riads dotted around the old medina will keep you well rested in between trips to the souk.
Focus any trip here around the Jemaa El Fna, one of Africa's busiest squares and the beating heart of Marrakech. It's attracted locals and tourists for centuries and each night reverberates with a carnival of sound - as food stalls open up and storytellers and snake charmers entertain. The Jemaa El Fna is surrounded by the city's famous covered souks, which offer plenty of opportunity to barter over a colourful Moroccan rug or an intricate local antique.
A trip to the lush Mamounia Gardens and the quiet ramparts of the Badii Palace, which was constructed by Sultan Ahmed El-Mansour in the 16th century, offer a welcome respite from the energetic souks.
