The Atlas Mountains stretch for more than 1500 miles, dominating the southern region of Morocco. The mountains are criss-crossed with fantastic trekking routes that should feature on anyone's list of the best places to enjoy walking holidays.

Toubkal, the Atlas Mountains' tallest peak, is situated just south of Marrakech, in the Toubkal National Park. This is the highest point in North Africa and during the winter months is covered in a thick layer of snow, vividly contrasting with the desert plains below. The mountains sustain some spectacular wildlife, including the endangered Barbary leopard, the Cuvier's gazelle and the Northern Bald Ibis.

The Atlas range also provides the chance to visit small, stony Berber villages, which sit snugly in its lush valleys and along craggy mountain passes. Travelling on these passes - on foot or by bike - and stopping each night at a kasbah, is a highlight of any Morocco holiday.
